DDoS Attacks in the First Half of 2024

DDoS Attacks in the First Half of 2024

Recent DDoS attacks including the Port of Seattle and Microsoft are showing that Cybercriminals are becoming more bold and attacking organizations regardless of size or industry. For many businesses, DDoS protection has been a nice to have versus a need to have, but with the increase in recent attacks, organizations are beginning to realize that DDoS protection needs to be a part of their security portfolio. To help provide more context on the importance of preventing these DDoS attacks, we are sharing our first half results that showcase the increase in attacks and the work that is being done protecting organizations through our DDoS Protection and Mitigation Services solution.

In the first half of 2024, we recorded an increase of 25% in multi-vector attacks and we continue to see these sophisticated attacks occurring in the second half of 2024.

Chart showing an increase of 25% in multi-vector attacks in the first half of 2024

Diving a bit more into the details, we are seeing that 96% of attacks are less than 1G in bandwidth, with 52% being less than 10 minutes long. This corresponds with what is being reported globally. While the large attacks receive the most press coverage, it is the small attacks that can impact business through link saturation events if not mitigated. Shorter, sharper DDoS attacks are on the rise as attackers are taking non-traditional approaches to disrupt networks. Attackers who take this approach are looking for vulnerabilities with the intent to circle back again with a more prolonged attack. Short burst attacks disrupt the enterprise with small jabs rather than one long prolonged attack. Without DDoS protection, it is difficult to mitigate as attacks are random but repeated, causing service disruption but not for a prolonged period of time.

By having always-on protection, these short-bust hits are mitigated to the network which allow enterprises to stay productive and their hybrid cloud and on-premise solutions secured. In cases like the attacks below, it would be difficult if not impossible to mitigate without organizations having an always-on approach to secure the infrastructure.

Bandwidth Groups Percent
0Gbps-0.99Gbps 96.5%
1Gbps-4.99Gbps 1.9%
5Gbps-9.99Gbps 0.7%
>=10Gbps 0.9%

Gone are the days when businesses should add DDoS protection as an insurance policy. GTT’s DDoS Protection and Mitigation Services solution prevented over 48K attacks with a reduction in attack frequency by 8% from Q1 to Q2. This should serve as a stark warning that DDoS protection should be a must have for organization’s security portfolios.

Building a robust security portfolio that can protect organizations from cybercriminals who are using the latest and greatest in technology can often be a daunting task, even for the best security professionals. Having a partner that is with you every step of the way is a great first step and can be achieved with a Managed Service Provider (MSP). With the experience and knowledge of the security landscape, MSPs can craft a portfolio with the right solutions that are cost efficient and meet organizations objectives all while protecting their people, customers and assets.
